Marketing in the age of assistance
Thursday, November 1, 2018
Reading time: 3 minutes
More than ever, people are speaking to devices as part of their daily routine.
In the same way that smartphones revolutionized the way we shop online, the impact of voice assistants is now starting to show through integration with phones, cars, TVs and homes.
We use the Google Assistant to put together shopping lists, manage our finances, and control our homes. But recent research has shown that we don’t just use voice to multitask - we use it to make purchases.
These insights show the massive impact that voice-activated speakers like Google Home are having on the average consumer.
They drive action
62% of people say they’re likely to make a purchase through their speaker in the next month, and 44% make weekly purchases. People are growing more comfortable using voice to shop online, and retail websites need to take notice. Speaking of growing more comfortable…
They're part of the family
Almost 70% of voice searches are made through natural language, not the keywords we use in web searches. And 41% of people say it feels like talking to a family member or friend, using words like “please” and “sorry” as part of the conversation.
They're part of the daily routine
72% of people say their speakers are used as part of their daily routine. From checking commute times in the morning to setting shopping reminders in the evening, smart speakers are now “part of the furniture” in an increasing number of homes.
They're brand-friendly
More than half of the people we surveyed said they want to receive info about sales, deals, and promotions from brands through their speaker. This opens up a huge opportunity for companies to project a literal ‘brand voice’, strengthening their emotional bonds with consumers.
It’s not just special offers either - people want to hear from brands about a wide range of information.
As voice search grows in popularity, it’s up to agencies to stay up-to-date with the tech, and find creative and practical ways to integrate it into their clients’ campaigns. The best way to do this is to get familiar with
Actions on Google Assistant
.
The Google Assistant is the voice that answers when you ask Google Home for the weather forecast, or the app on your phone for the fastest route to coffee. Actions are the programming signals within the Google Assistant that process these requests. These Actions can be built for free by anyone, simply and effectively.
So if you have a restaurant client, you could build an Action to check the daily specials or order food for takeout. Or if you have a client in retail, you could build an Action for instant checkouts or personalized recommendations.
Google Assistant is available across over 500 million devices, and growing. It’s a major part of the future of online shopping and advertising. Before talking to your clients about its capabilities, check out this
video playlist
for everything you’ll need to build your first Action.

AdWords Editor Version 9.5 for Windows and Mac now available
Thursday, August 25, 2011
Today, we’re excited to announce Adwords Editor 9.5! This version supports Campaign Experiments, Location Extensions, and plenty of other features to boost your productivity while managing your AdWords campaigns. We've highlighted the key changes below, and you can see the complete list of feature updates in the
AdWords Editor Version 9.5 release notes
.
AdWords Editor Version 9.5 highlights:
Campaign Experiments
You can now do the following to maintain your campaign experiments:
Apply and edit an experiment status (e.g. “control only”, “experiment only”, “control and experiment”) at the ad group, ad, or keyword level.
Apply and edit a Default Max. CPC, Display Network Max. CPC, or Max. CPM bid multiplier at the ad group level.
Apply and edit a Max. CPC bid multiplier at the keyword level.
Import and export experiment status and bid multipliers in both CSV and XML formats.
Location Extensions
Version 9.5 supports new and existing location extensions. You can create new manual location extensions for any address, modify existing locations, and download/upload location extensions in CSV and XML formats.
Background Download
If you’re working on several large accounts, you can now download them in the background while you’re working on another open account. This can be a great timesaver by allowing you to continue working rather than waiting for the download to finish.
We also listened to your feedback and made several usability improvements, including improved revert functionality and streamlined Add Multiple Items workflow.
The next time you log into your AdWords Editor account, you will be prompted to upgrade. You may also download Version 9.5 from the
AdWords Editor website
. After you install the new version of AdWords Editor, you will need to download your accounts again. To preserve your comments and unposted changes, select the
Backup then Upgrade
option in the automatic upgrade prompt and save the backup file to your computer. Then, re-download your account and
import the backup file
to AdWords Editor. A small portion of users may need to
manually uninstall the previous version
of AdWords Editor.

Doing more with the +1 button, more than 4 billion times a day
Wednesday, August 24, 2011
In June we launched the
+1 button for websites
, making it easier to recommend content across the web. In July, the +1 button crossed
2 billion daily views
, and we also made it
a lot faster
. Today the +1 button appears on more than a million sites, with over 4 billion daily views, and we're extremely excited about this momentum.
It's just the beginning, however, and today we're launching two more features that make +1 buttons more useful for users and publishers alike.
Sharing with your circles on Google+
Clicking the +1 button is a great way to highlight content for others when they search on Google. But sometimes you want to start a conversation right away—at least with certain groups of friends. So beginning today, we're making it easy for Google+ users to share webpages with their circles, directly from the +1 button. Just +1 a page as usual and look for the new "Share on Google+" option. From there you can comment, choose a circle and share.
The new +1 button on
Rotten Tomatoes
+Snippets
When you share content from the +1 button, you’ll notice that we automatically include a link, an image and a description in the sharebox. We call these "+snippets," and they're a great way to jumpstart conversations with the people you care about.
Of course: publishers can benefit from +snippets as well. With just a few changes to their webpages, publishers can actually customize their +snippets and encourage more sharing of their content on Google+. More details are available on the
Google Webmaster blog
.
We're rolling out sharing and +snippets globally over the next week, but if you’d like to try the new +1 button now, you can join our
Google+ Platform Preview
. Once you're part of the Preview, just visit a site with the +1 button (like
Rotten Tomatoes
) and +1 the page. Thanks for all of your feedback so far, and stay tuned for more features in the weeks and months ahead!

Simplified account creation with new My Client Center feature
Friday, May 13, 2011
As part of our continued effort to improve the
account management tools for agencies and large advertisers
, we rolled out optional-login accounts, a new feature that simplifies the account creation process within
My Client Center (MCC)
by enabling a new AdWords account to be created within the MCC without a login or password.
The benefit of optional-login accounts is that it allows agencies and clients to create new AdWords accounts with the MCC without the need to create email addresses and passwords exclusively for the new account.
Here are some FAQs to help you take advantage of this feature:
1. How do I create an optional-login account in AdWords?
When you click on the button ‘Create Account’ within your MCC, complete the three required fields: account name, time zone and currency. You’ll also see a collapsible link to “Invite another user (optional),” which provides the option to invite a user to the account. Even if you opt not to, once you click save, you will have a new, live account.
2. What if I want an account to have a login?
You can either “Invite another user (optional)” during the account creation process, or follow the normal process for inviting a user to an AdWords account: go to the “My Account” tab, click on “Account Access” and choose the link “Invite other users."
3. Where do notifications go for optional-login accounts?
Red Alert Account Notifications (such as billing notifications or policy violations emails) will be sent to the email associated with the MCC. For non-red alerts, make sure you’ve opted in to notifications on the ‘My Client Settings’ page at the MCC level. You also may opt into performance suggestions and newsletters specifically for the optional login account. Such notifications will be sent to the email associated with the MCC.
Visit the AdWords Help Center for additional FAQs for
optional-login account creation

Thursday, May 5, 2011

We’ve highlighted key changes below. More details are available in the
AdWords Editor Version 9.0 release notes

AdWords Editor Version 9.0 highlights:

Paste Text
as well as to import
From File
.
Set high-end mobile targeting options
- AdWords Editor now supports the ability to set campaigns to target high-end mobile devices, (including Android, iPhone, iPad and Palm) and carriers in Campaign Settings.
Better manage multiple accounts and MCCs
- To help you better manage multiple accounts, AdWords Editor now offers sort and search for accounts, select and remove multiple accounts, and a new dropdown menu above the Account tree in AdWords Editor that displays recently accessed accounts, so that you can quickly switch to any one of them.
In addition, when adding an MCC account to in the Add New AdWords Account dialog, you can search within the list of available child accounts, display extra columns, and move up to a different level in the MCC account hierarchy.
More easily find and make bulk changes to negative keywords, placements, or audiences
- To more easily locate and manage negative keywords, placements, or audiences in your account, we’ve changed the way we display Negatives in AdWords Editor. The Negatives tab has been removed, and you can instead toggle between displaying negative or positive keywords, placements, or audiences by clicking the
Positives
or
Negatives
switch on each item’s respective tab.
The Select Duplicates button is now available for negative keywords when in the Duplicate keywords view mode.

Make the most of Google Partner Search with new lead management features
Friday, March 18, 2011
Today we released new functionality in
Google Partner Search
that allows advertisers looking for account management support to directly initiate contact with certified partners by filling out a lead form, and for certified partners to easily review and respond to inbound inquiries. We’re making this change in response to both advertiser and certified partner feedback that they’d like to see improvements to the lead management process, as well as the request process for inquiring clients.
When Google Partner Search first launched in
April 2009
, if a prospective client found your listing and wished to contact you, he would need to go directly to your company site to find contact information.
Now, to make the lead management process more efficient, we added a “Contact us” button on the company profile page, enabling clients to review and contact certified partners directly through Partner Search:
Prospective clients will automatically be sent a confirmation email that the lead was sent, and your company will receive an email alert that a new lead is available for review. You can then review the leads by clicking on the “Lead Management” link, and from there can elect to take further action:
For certified partners, the new “Lead Management” link will make it easier to track where leads are coming from, and understand conversion rates for different lead sources.
If you’re a certified partner with offices in multiple countries we recommend having a profile page for each country to make the most of this new functionality. This will make it easier for prospective clients to find local partner support. If you opt to do this, you will need to have a minimum of one certified individual in the respective country (a certified individual can only be associated with one company profile).
In addition, to increase the likelihood of receiving targeted leads, make sure that your company’s profile information is complete and up-to-date, and that you’ve set the budget range to what you’re willing to manage. You may edit the minimum and maximum budget managed, along with industries, languages and countries served, and services provided, by clicking on the “My Company” tab, selecting the “Profile” link, then reviewing your company’s “Service Information.”
For more information on these, and other features of the Google Certification Program and Partner Search Engine, please visit the program

New features to help you manage your Google AdWords Certification Program account
Friday, January 21, 2011
In 2010 we
introduced
a new Google AdWords Certification program to equip you and your companies with more up-to-date, comprehensive, strategy-focused training and certification on the latest tools and best practices for managing AdWords accounts. Along with the revised certification program, we launched
Google Partner Search
, an opt-in online, searchable directory that helps advertisers identify Certified Partners to help them manage their AdWords accounts.
Over the last few months, you’ve shared feedback with us that you’d like features which make it easier to associate your individual certification with a company and more intuitive to add users to your company profile. We’re pleased to share that we’ve now released features to address each of these points of feedback.
Request to link your individual qualification to a company
Historically, to join a company in the Google Certification Program, you would need to be invited by an Administrator on your company’s account, making it difficult to join if you do not know the Administrator. To fix this challenge, we now offer a feature enabling you to search for your company and request to join yourself. If you would like to contribute your
individual qualification
to a company account, you may now do so by clicking on the “My Company” link and searching for the company you wish to join. Be sure to type in at least one complete word that matches the company’s name.
Companies -- easily manage Professionals and Administrators
We’ve made it more intuitive for your company to manage the Professionals and Administrators within the Company account, as well as to review requests from users requesting to join the company, with the updated Account Access page.
On the “Users” tab, account administrators can change a user’s status to either Administrator or Professional, as well as revoke access:
The “Incoming requests” tab allows account administrators to see all requests to join from individuals, and either accept or reject them. Finally, the “Invitations sent” tab can be used to directly send invitations to qualified individuals.
Add or update Google Accounts associated with your profile
We know that qualified individuals may change companies, or use multiple email addresses throughout the day. We’ve therefore made it possible for you to
add multiple Google Accounts
to your account, as well as to change the primary email to which you receive communication for the Google Certification Program.
For more information on the new Google Certification Program feature changes, visit the
Help Center

AdWords Editor 8.0.1 for Windows and Mac
Friday, September 3, 2010
In order to make it easier for you to manage your account and take advantage of location extensions, we’re releasing a new version of
AdWords Editor
, 8.0.1, for Windows and Mac.
AdWords Editor 8.0.1 now supports location extensions, our new and improved way to run local ads. To support this change, we've transitioned the local business ads in your AdWords account to ads that are compatible with location extensions, added the Extensions tab in the AdWords Editor interface, and removed the Local Business Ads tab. This new Extensions tab should help make it easy for you to create and manage your location extensions.

To learn more about all of the new features in version 8.0.1, such as support for campaigns using target CPA and enhanced CPC bidding options, read the

Keep current on all things advertising
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
The rapid pace of change in the advertising space can be dizzying. From new ad formats to new ad systems, from startups to mergers, the marketing industry is running at a million miles an hour, and it’s often daunting to keep up with it all. We know that staying informed takes a lot of effort, and it’s critical to make good decisions about how you spend your time and resources.
That’s why we put together
Google Ad News
. Powered by Google News, Ad News is a simple but powerful way for anyone in the advertising industry to track current news coverage on relevant subjects such as display, search, mobile and even traditional media - all in one place. Subscribe to news feeds in the categories you care about most, or search to find coverage on topics related to your business, such as your niche industry or brand.
We invite you to check it out and share it with your colleagues. Hopefully, you’ll find lots of relevant news that’ll help you spend less time scouring the web and more time building your business.

Introducing the Google Display Network
Friday, June 18, 2010
(cross posted from the
Inside AdWords Blog
)
Over the past year, we’ve been focused on investing in display advertising, and we’ve seen great momentum from the increasing number of you running display campaigns with Google. We’ve rolled out new
features
and
targeting options
and more precise
measurement tools
. To provide more places for you to run display ads, we’ve added more publisher sites (through Google AdSense and DoubleClick Ad Exchange) to our ad network of over one million sites. Meanwhile, many of you have continued to run ads on YouTube and
our own properties
. In an effort to make our display media offerings clearer to advertisers like you and agencies, we’re creating a new umbrella name for all these properties, the Google Display Network.
The Google Display Network will comprise all of the sites (apart from search sites), where you can buy ads through Google, including YouTube, Google properties such as Google Finance, Gmail, Google Maps, Blogger as well as over one million Web, video, gaming, and mobile display partners (our display partners include all of our AdSense and DoubleClick Ad Exchange partner sites that allow text and/or display ads). The Google Display Network offers all ad formats - text, image, rich media, and video ads - enabling you to unleash your creativity and engage potential customers across the Web.
You can run ads on the Google Display Network the same way you always have. Either place bids through AdWords or make reservations on YouTube and Google Finance with the help of a Google account team.
In the upcoming weeks, you’ll see a change in the AdWords interface reflecting this new term, and you’ll see Google Display Network where you might have seen Google Content Network mentioned. We’ve also launched a
new website
showcasing the sites and benefits available to you on the Google Display Network.
We’re working hard to offer the best display advertising solutions and we look forward to introducing new features on the Google Display Network that help you reach your advertising goals.
